Code of Professional Conduct
Background

In order to make sure that the members subscribe to the CIHAPB's values and achieve high standards of personal and professional conduct. Rules and regulations are made to cover the conduct of its members and to provide for sanctions in the event of their infringement and to set up disciplinary procedures for the investigation of alleged breaches and for the imposition of sanctions where appropriate and for the hearing and final disposition of appeals by a member against any findings that he has committed a breach of such rules and regulations and or against the sanction imposed in respect of such breach.


Purpose of the Code

The CIHAPB requires its members to accept and abide by its Code of Professional Conduct as a condition of membership. The Code sets out in detail the standards of personal and professional conduct required. The Code is intended to give CIHAPB members clear guidance about how to conduct themselves. It is also of value to employers, customers and the community by demonstrating the standard of behaviour they can expect of CIHAPB members.


Who does the Code apply to?

The code applies to members of CIHAPB in all membership categories. Every member has a duty to accept and abide by this Code as a condition of CIHAPB membership.


1. Respect for others
CIHAPB members must:
  1. Treat themselves and others with respect;
  2. Make only their professional or authorized views known publicly;
  3. Be accountable for the impact of their decisions, actions and views;
  4. Adhere to and support practices that promote equality, diversity, inclusion and human rights;
  5. Not to disclose to a third party any confidential or privileged information entrusted to them by their employers, clients or customers;
  6. Demonstrate sensitivity for the customers, culture s and beliefs of others.

2. Act with integrity
CIHAPB members must:
  1. At all times work within the spirit and the letter of the law and not encourage, assist or collude with others who may be engaged in unlawful conduct;
  2. Ensure that their private, personal, political and financial interests do not conflict with their professional duties and disclose any conflicts that arise to the appropriate authority;
  3. Not allow their professional judgement or conduct to be compromised by personal gain, self-interest or the undue influence of others;
  4. Deal honestly and fairly in business with employees, employers, clients, tenants, other professionals and the public;
  5. Be impartial, objective, conscientious and diligent;
  6. Not be party to any action that is misleading, unfair or against their own professional knowledge.

3. Take responsibility
CIHAPB members must:
  1. Perform their duties diligently, conscientiously, without favor and with regard to the interests of their employers, professional colleagues, their customers and business associates;
  2. Challenge others if they suspect unlawful or unethical behavior;
  3. Apply their informed and impartial judgement and ethical decision-making principles in reaching decisions particularly in cases where it is essential to balance different demands;
  4. Be conscious of the individual, social and environmental impact of their work and work to minimize harm.

4. Maintain professional competence
CIHAPB members must:
  1. Conduct themselves in a way which upholds the reputation of the profession and CIHAPB;
  2. Ensure they have the appropriate skills and knowledge to undertake their duties both now and in the future;
  3. Ensure those working for them have the appropriate level of competence, supervision and support;
  4. Comply with any CIHAPB regulations on education and continuing professional development that may be issued from time to time;
  5. Have regard to any CIHAPB guidance on professional practice that may be issued from time to time;
  6. Hold the appropriate levels of insurance for the work they undertake;
  7. Report breaches of the Code of Conduct to CIHAPB in accordance with the relevant policy of the time.
