Event Details: Visit to Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works
The construction of Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works commenced in 1997 and was commissioned in October 2000. It is one of the most advanced water treatment plants in the world. The Water Treatment Works occupies an area of about 120,000 square metres and it serves Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai, Ngau Tam Mei, San Tin and Mai Po.

Unlike other water treatment works, ozone is used for disinfection in Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works and no chlorine is added to the water in the early stages of treatment process. The Water Treatment Works also uses biological filters for effective removal of ammonia. The use of ozone provides a good environment for the growth of bacteria in the biological filter. The use of ozone and biological filter in water treatment is the first of its kind in Hong Kong.

On 26 August 2006, the Chartered Institute of Housing Asian Pacific Branch and the Hong Kong Institute of Housing jointly organized a visit to Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works. The visit received overwhelming response and over 40 members from both Institutes participated in the activity. Through the visit, members learnt a lot on the stringent water quality control of the Water Supplies Department and had a better understanding on its services provided. Members found that the visit is beneficial for them in carrying out their daily duties.
