Event Details: International Housing Conference and Exhibition – Cape Town
On 8-12 October 06, the Southern African Housing Foundation organized an International Housing Conference and Exhibition in Cape Town of South Africa. The theme of the conference is "Developing Sustainable Communities" with special focus on the development of Sub-Saharan Africa. Upon the invitation of SAHF, two members of the Executive Committee of the Chartered Institute of Housing Asian Pacific Branch (CIHAPB), namely Mr H N Wong and Mr P Y Fung have attended the conference and exhibition.


The Conference and Exhibition were opened in Cape Sun Hotel on 8 October 06 evening where delegates were warmly welcomed by the Chairman of Advisory Committee of SAHF Mr Sinothi Malunga and CEO of SAHF Mr John Hopkins. The Conference was officiated by the National Minister of Housing, Minister Lindiwn Sisulu on 9 October 06 morning in the conference hall of the hotel. Follow the opening of the conference, Premier Ebrahim Rasool, Premier of Western Cape Provincial Government delivered the welcome speech to the conference. Thereafter, Ms Janet Hale, President of Chartered Institute of Housing addressed the conference and gave an account on the work of Chartered Institute of Housing.


Over 50 speakers from South Africa and other parts of the world have presented in the conference, including Government officials, housing professionals, academics, CEOs of large corporation, bankers, researchers etc. Mr P Y Fung, Chairman of IT and PR committee of CIHAPB also presented a paper on "Public Housing in Hong Kong" in the conference to share our experience in Public Housing with those attending the meeting. More than 400 delegates from various counties have attended the conference includes United Kingdom, America, Australia, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.


On 10 October evening, delegates have attended the SAHF Annual Dinner and Housing Awards in Spier Wine Estate where awards were presented to excellent students and well performed property management companies. On 11 October afternoon, delegates were arranged to visit various housing developments in the metropolitan area of Cape Town, including the Royal Maitland development: Inner City Re-generation Project by the Cape Town Community Housing Company (pty) Ltd and the squatter areas in the city.


The conference provided an excellent platform for delegates to meet, learn, exchange ideas and share experience and ended with a great success. Delegates find that it is of great benefit in attending the conference and had a memorable experience. Through the conference, delegates of CIHAPB have established a close linkage with our counterparts in South Africa and learnt a lot of their experience in Housing Management.
