The Chartered Institute of Housing Asian Pacific Branch organized two site tours to visit O.PARK1, the first organic resources recovery centre located in Siu Ho Wan of North Lantau. The centre uses anaerobic digestion technology to convert food waste into biogas, which is a source of renewable energy similar to natural gas, for electricity generation. The residues from the process can be produced as compost for landscaping and agriculture use. During the tour, the docent introduced the most efficient and environmentally sound method of recycling food waste, which is to build a network of dedicated recycling plants. By doing so, less food waste will be disposed of in landfills, which will consume less valuable landfill capacity. The two site tours had a total of 35 participants.
