Tour of the Central Market
Central Market is one of the oldest wet markets and an architectural landmark in Hong Kong. The current fourth generation of Central Market was built in 1939. It has received a contemporary renovation for conservation and revitalization project under the Urban Renewal Authority. For restoration and preservation works for this 80-year-old grade three historic building, the Market's original built appearance, structure, and features remain mostly – different entrances lead into the Market; the building involves functionalism for each floor; the traditional terrazzo and Shanghai plastering are widely used; lampshades are hanged as the symbol of the classic wet market as well as historical red brick walls kept as a testament to its predecessor. It also introduced the urban oasis concept with green plants; used different-sized event zones for various performances and exhibitions; and separated shops by low-level partitions etc. Through this professional guided tour by the Property Management Department of Chinachem Group, members learned about history, conservation and revitalization. The tour had a total of 53 participants.
